Through objects like artificial ecosystems, space colonies, digital culture, Science Fiction, or filmic special effects, Ralo Mayer’s work investigates the relations between nature and society as a crucial arena of our present-day world. As artist-in-residence of the Austrian federal art program in Tokyo he currently examines the nature-culture complex and cultural translations in a Japanese context.
At the Austrian Cultural Forum, Ralo Mayer will present examples of his transmedia work, including his latest essay-film “Extra-Terrestrial Ecologies”, addressing questions like:
Is outer space just a dead and empty vacuum, or full of traces of quite earthly developments?
What can we learn from Biosphere 2, a giant greenhouse built in the 1990s as a test for space colonies, in relation to today’s global ecological issues like climate change?
Did the Wiener Riesenrad, Vienna’s iconic Ferris Wheel, inspire space stations?

Ralo Mayer

Ralo Mayer is an artist, filmmaker and researcher based in Vienna. His works delineate "ecologies of contemporary history" linking past futures and speculations of the present-day. Based on extensive research, Mayer interweaves objects from space exploration, ecology, or the Science Fiction of everyday life into multilayered narratives across media like installation, film, text, or performance. His work has been presented at international exhibitions, film festivals, and conferences, and won several awards. For his artistic research PhD-project "Space Un·Settlements", Mayer investigates the interrelations of ideas and experiments of life in space and earthly realities.
